REMEMBERING THE LINDBLAD EXPLORER

The Lindblad Explorer was the first cruise ship dedicated to tourism in Antarctica, beginning in 1969. It was also the first cruise ship to sink in Antarctica after striking an iceberg near the South Shetland Islands in November, 2007. Antarctican Society member Dr. Ralph Glasgal booked his family for a trip aboard the Lindblad Explorer in 1985. These are excerpts from his personal film taken during the trip. It is a glimpse of how tourism was done in Antarctica decades ago.

See Ralph’s diary and video from his time as a scientist at Wilkes Station during the IGY under Memoirs and Diaries and Videos on this website.
