Antarctica Winter Parties, 1957 and 1982

Antarctic stations winter crews face unique psychological challenges due to the extreme cold, long periods of darkness and confined living conditions. Each crew deals with this situation, typically by organizing parties during the winter to have fun and “blow off steam.” The two videos below include audio recorded at parties from 1957 and 1982. The music 25 years apart is decidedly different but the enthusiasm of the participants is much the same.

Society member Dick Chappell was an 18-year-old Boy Scout when he wintered at Little America V during the International Geophysical Year (IGY) in 1957-58. Images in the video are from the extensive Society digital images archive for that year. Long-time Society members will recognize the distinct voice of the Iceberg Theater “roving reporter” as that of Society stalwart Dr. Paul C. Dalrymple.

Society member Tom Henderson recorded the audio from the 1982 Double Digit Party at Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station. Images were taken from the Society digital images archive and from personal collections.

These recordings contain language which some may find offensive.
